ONIS SAMPSON is a Nigerian lawyer, award-winning poet, short story writer, essayist, playwright, novelist-in-the-making and singer. His book of poems, A city is talking inside my head was published April 2017 by Proofnet Publishers.

He is the winner of the 2013 McPherson University Essay Writing Competition and the winner of the June edition of the 2015 Brigitte Poirson Poetry Contest organised by Words Rhyme and Rhythm, Nigeria’s biggest online poetry platform.

He came 2nd place in the 2016 World Union of Poets— Poetry Prize of Africa and was chosen as Semi-finalist, 2016 Saving Endangered Species International Playwriting Prize.

He made the longlist in the 2016 Babishai Niwe Poetry Award for his poem, “Portrait of the Tongue.” His short story, A Soldier’s Republic won him third place in the 2016 African Pen Short Story Prize. He was shortlisted for the 2019 Lagos Theatre Festival Playwriting Prize.

His poem, “Road to the Skeleton Galleria,” published on the 12th of September, 2016 was poem of the week in the prestigious literary journal, Vinyl.

He was part of the long-list in the 2019 Erbacce Poetry Prize. His short story, Road to the Prayer House was one of 30 stories out of 400 submitted short stories liked by the team of readers for the 2019 Writivism Short Story Prize. Also in 2019, he was a finalist in the 2019 Inspire Us Short Story Contest for which he was flown from Lagos, all flight expenses paid by the organizers, to Accra, Ghana for the award night. A prize money of $100 was paid and the story, An Unassuming Woman was published on Amazon Kindle and on the World reader app. The Prize, an initiative of Worldreader, is supported by the HGB Fund and Helen Gurley Brown’s Pussy Cat Foundation.
